Disordered Eating in Sport

Dual expertise in sports nutrition and the treatment of eating disorders

High achieving athletes often rely on precision and detailed execution of planned movements, behaviors, and training rituals in order to perform and win.   However, these traits may also contribute to the development of disordered eating when used in extreme or a great deal of reinforcement is received.  For example, perfectionism can be viewed as being “detail oriented”, excessive training can be viewed as being “dedicated”, and “clean” eating can be seen as “committed to your sport”.  These behaviors often become stronger and stronger, eventually hindering physical and mental performance.  Find freedom from overly prescriptive approaches that result in deprivation and discover a restored relationship with food and what your body is truly capable of.  Lauren’s dual expertise in sports nutrition and the treatment of eating disorders offers unique and exceptional insight into the complex world of disordered eating in sport.

Difference between Nutritionist & Registered Dietitian

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a nutrition expert who holds at minimum a bachelor’s degree focused on nutrition science from an ACEND-approved program, completed 1200 hours of supervised practice in various fields, and passed a National Boards Exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.  Registered Dietitians also must complete continuing professional education to maintain their credentials.

A “nutritionist” is not a nationally recognized title and is less clearly defined.  It could be someone who worked for years to earn a graduate degree in nutrition science.  It could also be someone who earned a certificate at a weekend workshop.  No matter who you choose to work with, it’s important that they have rigorous training to best meet your needs.
